HILO The Orchid Isle
The city of Hilo is located on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is the largest island in the Hawaiian chain. It is also the youngest and least populated, boasting the southernmost point in the United States. Hilo's tropical flowers are among the finest in the world. Long lasting Hawaiian tropical - antheriums, orchids, proteas, heliconias, gingers, birds of paradise and exotics, come in a rainbow of shapes and sizes.
If you are driving west towards Kona, it will take you along the Hamakua coastline. You will experience the lush tropical rainforests of Hawaii and see the glistening waterfalls (Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls), secluded valley of Waipo Valley. The Visitor Information Station at Mauna Kea allows you to see the clearest and darkest skies on the planet.
